Keeping Your Loved Ones Safe During An Emergency

When faced with a frightening situation, sometimes knowledge, preparation, and communication are the only things standing in the way of you and utter chaos. There are many possible emergency disasters that can occur including fires, floods, and weather related emergencies such as ice storms. At Heavenly Hands Hospice, we want to assist with preparing our patients and families at home before an emergency happens. Here are some ways to keep you and your family safe in case of an emergency.

  1. Keep emergency phone numbers available and close to your telephone. These include phone numbers for Heavenly Hands Hospice, local police, fire department, ambulance services and the electric, gas, and or power companies servicing your area.
  2. Stock up on emergency supplies including a 1 to 2 week supply of bottled water, canned food, flashlights and candles, first aid supplies, heating fuel and medication.
  3. Ensure that you have smoke detectors that are in good working condition.
  4. Properly maintain your car and keep it filled with gasoline. Keep emergency supplies in the car such as, a container of sand, shovel, windshield scraper, flares, blanket and a flashlight.
  5. Keep a radio and batteries to monitor local radio stations for instructions and updates.

Do you remember having emergency drills in school?

We also encourage you to conduct drills in your home. The drills that we practice over and over again will help us be able to spring into immediate action. Knowledge of the plan, preparation (performing the drills), and effective communication will allow everyone to weather the storm safely.
